Removal of ions from produced water using Powder River Basin coal

چکیده

Abstract In addition to being used as an energy source, coal also has significant potential for other, more sustainable uses including water treatment. this study, we present a simple approach treat that was produced during oil production and contained total dissolved solids (TDS) content of over 150 g/L using Powder River Basin (PRB) coal. PRB packing material in flow-through column effectively removed 60%–80% the cations anions simultaneously. Additionally, 71%–92% organic carbon all suspended solids. The removal mechanisms both were investigated. Cations by ion exchange with protons from oxygen-containing functional groups such carboxylic phenolic hydroxyl groups. Anions, mainly Cl −1 , appeared be through either formation resonance structures result delocalization electrons within molecules or ion–π interactions. We propose is “pseudo-amphoteric” can remove simultaneously exchanging ions ionized non-ionized acids are ubiquitous structure effect. Graphical abstract

Trace element chemistry of coal bed natural gas produced water in the Powder River Basin, Wyoming.

Coal bed natural gas (CBNG) produced water is usually disposed into nearby constructed disposal ponds. Geochemistry of produced water, particularly trace elements interacting with a semiarid environment, is not clearly understood. The objective of this study was to collect produced water samples at outfalls and corresponding disposal ponds and monitor pH, iron (Fe), aluminum (Al), chromium (Cr)...

What Explains the Increased Utilization of Powder River Basin Coal in Electric Power Generation?

This article examines possible explanations for increased utilization of Powder River Basin (PRB) coal in electric power generation that occurred over the last two decades. Did more stringent environmental policy motivate electric power plants to switch to less polluting fuels? Or, did greater use of PRB coal occur because relative price changes altered input markets in favor of this fuel. A ke...

Laboratory studies of the compressibility and permeability of low-rank coal samples from the Powder River Basin, Wyoming, USA

We characterize the mechanical properties of coal samples from the Powder River Basin (Wyoming, USA) by conducting laboratory experiments. We present results from laboratory measurements of adsorption, static and dynamic elastic moduli, and permeability as a function of effective stress, pore pressure, and gas species. Notably, we observe that CO2 adsorption causes the static bulk modulus to de...

Geochemistry of inorganic nitrogen in waters released from coal-bed natural gas production wells in the Powder River Basin, Wyoming.

Water originating from coal-bed natural gas (CBNG) production wells typically contains ammonium and is often disposed via discharge to ephemeral channels. A study conducted in the Powder River Basin, Wyoming, documented downstream changes in CBNG water composition, emphasizing nitrogen-cycling processes and the fate of ammonium. Dissolved ammonium concentrations from 19 CBNG discharge points ra...

Assessment of water quality in Blinaja River Basin (Kosovo) using the Canadian Water Quality Index (WQI)

Kosovo has limited natural water resources which should be well managed. This is recently realised through quantitative and qualitative monitoring of both surface and groundwater and by characterizing their quality according to their destination. In this paper, the Water Quality Index (WQI) developed by the Canadian Council of Environment Ministers (CCME WQI) was applied to evaluate the groundw...
